  • Teach your child to read. I believe in you!

Description

Good readers learn and use academic vocabulary to describe and interpret what they read.

A 3 page PDF written for parents to use with early readers whether they can read or not. Academic vocabulary includes basic terms like character, setting, problem, fact, opinion, etc.

Pro-Tips

  1. Teach the academic vocabulary and review often (columns 1 + 2).
  2. Ask questions about the academic vocabulary - before, during, and after - read alouds with early readers. Asking early readers questions about what you are reading is an important practice to start as early as possible. Early readers do not need to be able to read to do this comprehension work. You will model and help your early reader build critical thinking skills!
  3. Use the sentence frames to help your early reader answer your questions, if needed.
  4. Keep these reference sheets where you also keep your read aloud books.
