Good readers know their names are made up of sounds.
I illustrated and designed a Name Book printable activity for toddlers, inspired by a published book about a boy - "Andy, That's My Name" by Tomie DePaola. Creating visuals out of children's names is a very common early education classroom activity. Families can try this at home or any setting for young children.
Download the FREE PDF Name Book template for toddlers, ages 2-6. This PDF contains 8 fillable pages to help you explore the sounds in your child's name and build phonemic or sound awareness in words. Ask your early reader to help you make new words if they can already blend words. Print multiple copies of the “make a new word” page if needed, so the book can expand with new words you make up with the letters in your child's name.
Remember this is a very early literacy lesson and your child does NOT need to memorize the sounds in their name. This is more of an exploratory activity and a way to engage a young child's interest in letters.
